Seniors Meet People

Seniors Making New Friends Online

As a member of the Baby Boomer generation, and in my 60s, I can attest to the fact that it's not always easy for seniors to meet people our age. There are a few reasons for this. For one, most people our age are married. They have families and are enjoying their grandchildren. There's little reason or motivation to go out and meet new people.senior living Seniors Meet People

Another reason is that many of us are on Social Security. There's not a whole lot of discretionary money to play with. In addition, at this age, most of us have established our habits, lifestyles, and boundaries. Exploring beyond our little world can be a nervous venture. However, with the internet, it is possible to explore without spending a lot, jeopardizing our security, or compromising our values.

First of all, you need to familiarize yourself with computers and the internet. It's not necessarily fraught with dangers, but certainly there are some. Some senior centers provide classes or courses to help familiarize you with computers and the internet. Contact your local A.A.R.P. office, community center, or even the mayor's office. There, you should be able to get some leads. Oftentimes, libraries will hold classes on computers, email, and web surfing.

Presuming that you are familiar with computers, be not afraid to explore dating sites. Many dating sites are geared to seniors. Others serve people of all ages. You can create a profile without entering too much information about yourself. There are free sites that are very reliable. I've been on a free site for 10 years and have had the opportunity to meet many nice people. Some, I have not responded to, and others I have. I made a very dear friend on that site 10 years ago and we still talk frequently.

Your personal information is what you want to provide. The sites do not require name, address, or telephone number. My profile includes my likes, dislikes, pets, first date preferences, a few other facts, and a picture. I simply go through other profiles and write a quick note introducing myself. It's a stress-free site and situation. If the person I contact is interested, they'll write back and we either continue a correspondence or talk on the phone. Later, we may meet in a public place for tea or coffee.

Sometimes, those sites will also sponsor or advertise for social groups that go on outings. They can be as simple as a bingo game, camping, hiking, dancing, or as elaborate as cruises and European tours. It's a great way to get fresh air, socialize, and maybe learn a new sport or activity. I heartily recommend it!
